General Santos City

Gamusa Beach – General Santos City, Philippines.

The Southernmost city in the Philippines is General Santos City. Only two hours by car from Davao City, the highly urbanized General Santos (or Gen San as it is referred to throughout the country) is the 15th most populous city in the Philippines with over half a million residents and is classified as a first class city.

Gen San is nickednamed “The Tuna City”, highlighting tuna fishing, the cities principal industry. From the end of August through the first week of September each year, people flock to the city for its annual Tuna Festival for parades, culinary competitions and numerous showcases and thanksgiving celebrations.

While General Santos City may not have the same level of popular attractions as some of the Philippines other major tourist spots, it is still a great city to visit. Davao residents enjoy getting away to Gen San for a break and a change of pace.

What To Do In General Santos City

Beaches – The best beaches are outside the city itself, but are beautiful. Gumasa has white sand beaches that looks like it is straight out of a magazine. Glan beach has been featured in travel magazines.

Diving – Excellent dive sites are available with South Point in Sarangani province which is only twent minutes from the General Santos International Airport. There are cliff walls where you will see more soft and hard coral than you have seen anywhere.

Eat – Of course the Tuna City has the freshest (and cheapest) tuna anywhere in the country, but there are many great restaurants all over the city with all types of cuisines.

Shop – General Santos is home to an SM Mall, a Gaisano Mall and a Robinsons. Plenty of shopping can be done here.

Golf – There is a very nicely landscaped 18 hole golf course called the Sarangani Golf and Country Club about 40 minutes outside the city. Definitely worth a visit for golf fanatics.

General Santos City actually has the biggest airport in Mindanao and the second largest by runway space in the entire Philippines. There are daily flights from both Cebu and Manila into Gen San.

If you are coming from Davao, take one of the air conditioned buses or vans as it’s only about an hour and forty five minute drive.
